The young Swedish activist who is known to fight climate change has declined a 350,000 Danish kroner ($52,000 UDS). Read to learn about her reasons.
From de beginning
Greta Thunberg is a sixteen year old Swedish who has fought for months to gather millions of people around the world in joining her environmental mouvement. She has struck every Friday for now more than a year to make governments hear her message. The past weeks, she has travelled across the globe to witness people supporting her through climate strikes.
The declined award
Last Tuesday, Greta has received the 2019 Nordic Council's environmental award in Stockholm. Since she is currently striking in California, she could not be present. However she did responded to this prize by thanking the council, but mainly by refusing the $52,000 award. She said in an Instagram publication: "The climate movement does not need any more awards. What we need is for our politicians and the people in power start to listent to the current, best available science." Her strong message expresses how giving an award does not mean anything when the people who has actual power are not supporting the award-winner with concrete actions.
The climate activist has just started to share with the world her vision concerning the critical situation of our planet. The movement will certainly continue to grow and hopefully will keep putting pressure on people in power in order to follow make them join.
